Bringing awareness to the Nation's #1 weather-related threat: HEAT

MISSION x CORTADA

During the summer of 2023, the Xavier Cortada Foundation is partnering with the county’s Chief Heat Officer, MISSION, and the Coral Gables Museum to implement artistic interventions that encourage conversation and action around extreme heat, ultimately making Miami-Dade County safer and more resilient in the face of this critical public health threat. #𝙆𝙀𝙀𝙋𝘾𝙊𝙊𝙇𝙈𝙄𝘼𝙈𝙄𝘿𝘼𝘿𝙀

#KEEPCOOLMIAMIDADE

HEAT is the nation's #1 weather-related killer, more than tornados and hurricanes combined. The HEAT sends close to 200,000 people to the emergency room every year, costs the US Economy over $100 billion per year in losses and disproportionately impacts low-income and minority communities, especially our agricultural workers, who are over 20x more likely to die from heat-related injuries than civilian workers. Research shows that extreme heat will impact over 100 million Americans in the next 30 years. 100% of the profits from this cooling towel will be donated to the Xavier Cortada Foundation and heat safety awareness initiatives, helping to reshape the narrative - and provide solutions - around how we adapt to an increasing environment of extreme HEAT in the United States and around the world.

ABOUT THE ART:

Xavier Cortada Towel

Xavier Cortada’s “Keep Cool Miami-Dade” is a visual representation of the heat and humidity that defines life in Miami-Dade County. The vibrant sun, with its bold yellow and orange hues, symbolizes the scorching heat that makes it challenging and often dangerous for people to carry out their daily activities. The background’s contrasted, textured blues evoke the importance of hydration, shade, and finding ways to keep cool. This artwork is at the heart of #KeepCoolMiamiDade, a heat safety campaign raising awareness about the consequences of extreme heat while providing practical strategies for individuals to combat the worst effects.
